Frugal Friday: Get the Insurance

March 26, 2010

We learned an important lesson this week: when you rent a vehicle, you  MUST buy the insurance. You never know what is going to happen. Pictured above is our UHaul truck that moved all of our belongings from Sacramento to San Francisco. A crazy lady slammed into it while it was parked in front of our new apartment. Thankfully, no one was hurt, as we were around the corner stuffing our faces.

Later that evening as my husband and I were laying in bed in our new apartment, we reflected back on the moment 14 hours earlier when Ryan at the UHaul store asked us: “Do you want to add the insurance?” We are so glad we said “yes”. Next time you rent, just say “yes”. It’s always better to be safe, than cheap.

It’s Friday. Be frugal.

Such solid advice. I’m one of those naysayers when it comes to rental car insurance, but you better believe I’ll think of this next time I’m asked if I want it! Aside from crazy UHaul-hitting lady, I hope SF is off to a great start. 🙂

Totally agree. We totally got screwed by not getting insurance on a rental vehicle earlier this year. Our insurance covered the damage (after $1,000 deductible), but our rate went way up after that.

An even better tip though – rent under your American Express card (if you have one). They will cover EVERYTHING if the vehicle gets damaged, and you don’t have to pay for the insurance.

So glad no one was hurt!

Laura – American Express will cover car rentals, but specifically does not cover trucks.

It’s awesome with rental cars though. Wish I would have known this sooner.

Laura, good tip on using the American Express. I will have to do that next time!
